Wm. & Jannet Mcleod. Donald & Christina MacLeod.


Above are two of three panels inscribed in Latin within the ruins of a church building.. A plaque nearby by the former District Council's Museum Service provides the translation below, and explains that Donald MacLeod was the 3rd MacLeod of Talisker, the senior cadet family of the MacLeods of Dunvegan.



(WILLIAM McLEOD tacksman of) Ebost (departed) this life the 28 day of July 17..? years in the 54 year of his gae. He was married to Jannet McLEOD daughter of NORMAN McLEOD of Drynock for the space of 25 years. He had several children by her but no male issue living. This gentlemans death was universally lamented by all his friends and aquantance. Interred here likewise lies two of their children (---) ---ALD MCLEOD aged 5 years who departed the 8 day of May 1726 years and JANNET McLEOD aged 6 years who departed 16 October 1723 years. Passer-by pause/Near this spot is/DONALD MACLEOD of Talisker/a truly great man./If you can search you will find/no-one better than him for/sure in giving, in relieving. In apportioning largesse/forever applying himslf to this./If you were to look for greatness/of mind, you would scarcely/find an equal to him./But if you were to search for/affability and politeness of/manner/you woul search in vain for his equal./He was a pillar of support to/his country./A refuge to the needy./A just magistrate to the destitute/Consider his reputation from the rest/consider and you will be amazed./He as born/in the year of his redemption 1695/he died/1732/the 7th day before the ides of the 8th month. He had as his wife/CHRISTINA MacLEOD/of Contullich./She bore him nine sons of/whom three died/before the year 1733./And near here/her mortal remains were placed by/RODERICK, NORMAN and ALEXANDER.
