Erected by the officers and men/of H.M.N.Z. Hospital Ship no.2/SS. "Marama"/in memory of their beloved comrade/WILLIAM MATHESON/aged 26 years/(elder surviving son of/FARQUHAR MATHESON, Waterloo) who died of enteric fever at Southampton/on the 15th day of July 1916/the second year of the Great War.
"Dulce est decorum pro patria mori."

I presume that he was not classed as a war casualty because he was a merchant seaman and did not die as a result of enemy action so the grave is not listed by the CWGC.
